The Aesthetics of Harmony

Blanc de Chine.

Porcelain from Dehua International Itinerant Exhibition

Los Angeles, 2025

Dehua, nestled at the foothills of Mount Daiyun in central Fujian Province, China, is a county with millennia of history and a cradle of Chinese ceramic culture, recognized as the "World Capital of Ceramics". Here, kiln fires have burned for over 3,000 years, with 239 ancient kiln sites bearing witness to the evolution of porcelain-making from the proto-porcelain of the Xia and Shang dynasties to its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

In 2021, the Dehua Kiln Sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a core component of the "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China", becoming the first batch of ceramic kiln sites to receive this designation.

Dehua white porcelain has captivated the world with its "snow-white purity, mirror brightness, jade-like lustre, and silk-translucent texture", while names like "Ivory White" and "Lard White" have resounded across centuries. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, it traveled the Maritime Silk Road to distant markets, becoming a living testament to cross-cultural exchange.

In the Ming Dynasty, the legendary sculptor He Chaozong set the standard for porcelain sculpture, and Dehua white porcelain gained lasting renown as "Blanc de Chine" – the name by which it is known in French. Today, over 4,000 ceramic enterprises continue the legacy of "Blanc de Chine", with their products reaching more than 190 countries worldwide.

Dehua white porcelain captures the world's forms through the purity of white. Where classical elegance meets contemporary vision, traditional forms preserve master craftsmanship while modern designs breathe new life into the art of porcelain.
